GAIL (India) Limited reported a strong financial performance in the first quarter of FY 2026-27, with consolidated turnover reaching INR 41,277 crore and profit after tax (PAT), excluding minority interest, standing at INR 4,665 crore. The company’s performance was supported by portfolio diversification, favourable movements in energy price indices and disciplined supply management amid geopolitical disruptions and volatility in global energy markets.

Speaking during the company’s Q1FY27 earnings conference call, S. K. Sinha, Director (Finance), GAIL (India) Limited, said the financial year began amid significant uncertainty arising from the West Asia crisis, which affected certain gas and LPG volumes. However, the company managed the disruption through portfolio flexibility and spot sourcing while maintaining customer supplies and supporting India’s energy security.

Sinha highlighted the resilience of GAIL’s integrated business model, crediting the company’s diversified sourcing portfolio, supply management capabilities and continued investment in strategic projects for helping it navigate the challenging operating environment.

On a standalone basis, GAIL recorded gross turnover of INR 38,912 crore in Q1FY27, compared with INR 34,591 crore in Q4FY26, representing an increase of approximately 12%. Profit before tax (PBT) rose to INR 5,773 crore from INR 1,577 crore in the preceding quarter, while PAT increased to INR 4,292 crore from INR 1,262 crore.

On a consolidated basis, turnover increased to INR 41,277 crore from INR 35,499 crore in Q4FY26. EBITDA stood at INR 7,573 crore, compared with INR 2,703 crore in the previous quarter, while PBT rose to INR 6,268 crore from INR 1,966 crore. Consolidated PAT, excluding minority interest, increased to INR 4,665 crore from INR 1,485 crore.

GAIL continued to strengthen its gas transmission infrastructure during the quarter. The entire 1,707-kilometre Mumbai–Nagpur–Jharsuguda pipeline became operational on May 31, 2026, marking a significant milestone in expanding the country’s gas transportation network. In another development, Konkan LNG Limited became a wholly owned subsidiary of GAIL with effect from July 6, 2026, pursuant to an order of the National Company Law Tribunal dated June 3, 2026. The integration is expected to streamline operations, improve tax efficiencies and enhance the competitiveness of regasified liquefied natural gas sourcing.

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board also authorised three LPG pipeline projects: the 610-kilometre Jhansi–Sitarganj pipeline, the 556-kilometre Cherlapally–Nagpur pipeline and the 635-kilometre Shikarpur–Hubli–Goa pipeline. Together, the projects span more than 1,800 kilometres and involve estimated investments of approximately INR 6,700 crore over three years.

GAIL’s gas marketing business faced supply disruptions after force majeure was declared by Petronet LNG Limited, affecting volumes from Qatar. Seven cargoes under other contracts were also affected during the quarter. To bridge the supply gap and meet customer requirements, GAIL sourced eight spot cargoes during Q1FY27. Gas marketing volumes stood at 93.82 million standard cubic metres per day (MMSCMD), including 8.76 MMSCMD in international markets.

Favourable movements in price indices supported higher marketing spreads during the quarter. GAIL generated higher returns from Henry Hub-linked and nine-month Japan Customs-cleared Crude (JCC)-linked sourcing where corresponding sales were not indexed on the same basis. However, management expects this advantage to be largely temporary as the nine-month and three-month JCC averages converge and the benefits of index movements normalise.

Despite continued uncertainty, GAIL maintained its gas marketing PBT guidance at approximately INR 4,500 crore for FY27. The company will review this guidance after the results of subsequent quarters, depending on market conditions.

Natural gas transmission volumes increased to 122.36 MMSCMD in Q1FY27 from 118.99 MMSCMD in Q4FY26, supported primarily by an increase of approximately 4 MMSCMD in shipper volumes. Based on the prevailing operating trend and assuming the geopolitical situation continues, GAIL expects transmission volumes to reach approximately 123 MMSCMD for FY27. The company will continue to monitor geopolitical developments and domestic demand before making any necessary revisions to its outlook.

GAIL’s polymer business continued to face challenges from the diversion of natural gas feedstock towards priority sectors under the government’s notification declaring natural gas an essential commodity. Polymer production stood at 51 thousand metric tonnes (TMT) during the quarter, and the segment reported a loss of INR 130 crore. Although the plant is currently operating at full capacity, management expects the business to reach breakeven during FY27. GAIL is also pursuing a transition at its Pata Petrochemical Complex from natural gas to ethane feedstock to support sustainable margins over the longer term.

In the LPG transmission business, volumes declined by approximately 3% to 1,077 TMT from 1,114 TMT in the preceding quarter, mainly due to disruptions in LPG imports caused by the West Asia crisis. In contrast, the liquid hydrocarbons (LHC) segment recorded an increase in production from 194 TMT to 232 TMT, representing growth of approximately 20%. The improvement was supported by an additional allocation of domestic New Well Gas of around 0.597 MMSCMD. Production is expected to remain around these levels throughout FY27.

The LHC segment reported PBT of INR 772 crore in Q1FY27, compared with INR 144 crore in Q4FY26 and INR 489 crore in the corresponding previous financial year. Higher LPG prices amid disruptions in West Asia supported the segment’s performance.

GAIL continued to expand its city gas distribution (CGD) operations. Its CGD network across six geographical areas comprised 217 compressed natural gas (CNG) stations and 2.63 lakh domestic piped natural gas (DPNG) connections. During the quarter, the company added approximately 20,069 DPNG connections and three CNG stations.

Its wholly owned subsidiary, GAIL Gas Limited, operates in 16 geographical areas directly and nine through joint ventures. During Q1FY27, GAIL Gas added approximately 16,610 DPNG connections. As of June 30, 2026, the company had a network of 592 CNG stations and 7,93,684 DPNG connections. Over the next two years, GAIL Gas aims to add approximately 275 CNG stations and 3.70 lakh DPNG connections.

GAIL Gas recorded quarterly turnover of INR 3,326 crore, compared with INR 3,227 crore in Q4FY26. PBT increased by 3% to INR 162 crore from INR 158 crore, while PAT rose by 3% to INR 120 crore from INR 117 crore.

GAIL is progressing with several strategic pipeline and petrochemical projects. The remaining section of the Jagdishpur–Haldia–Bokaro–Dhamra Pipeline (JHBDPL), KKMBPL Phase II, the Gurdaspur–Jammu Pipeline and the C2-C3 Pipeline are scheduled for completion during FY27. The Vijaipur–Bina Pipeline and capacity augmentation of the DUPL-DPPL network are scheduled for completion in FY2027-28, while JLPL capacity augmentation is expected to be completed in July 2028.

In petrochemicals, the 1,250 KTA purified terephthalic acid (PTA) plant at GMPL is at an advanced stage of commissioning and is expected to begin production shortly. The 500 KTA propane dehydrogenation–polypropylene (PDH-PP) plant is scheduled for commissioning in the next financial year.

GAIL incurred capital expenditure of INR 6,176 crore during Q1FY27, reflecting progress across its strategic growth initiatives. The investments are directed towards strengthening gas infrastructure, expanding downstream capabilities, advancing clean energy projects and supporting India’s long-term energy transition and energy security objectives. The company remains on track to achieve its FY27 capital outlay target of approximately INR 11,500 crore.

GAIL’s first-quarter performance highlights the strength of its diversified energy portfolio and its ability to manage supply disruptions while pursuing infrastructure expansion. As geopolitical uncertainties continue to influence energy markets, the company’s focus on pipeline capacity, sourcing flexibility, petrochemical integration and city gas distribution is expected to remain central to its growth strategy and contribution to India’s energy security.
