Apollo Hospitals Founder Dr. Prathap C. Reddy Calls for Shift Towards Preventive, Personalised Healthcare

Apollo Hospitals Group Founder Dr. Prathap C. Reddy has called for a fundamental transformation in healthcare delivery, emphasising the need to move beyond treating illnesses after they emerge towards anticipating health risks, enabling early detection and preserving health for longer. In his message in Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Limited’s Annual Report for FY 2025–26, he highlighted the growing role of artificial intelligence (AI), digital innovation and clinical excellence in building a more integrated, accessible and personalised healthcare ecosystem.

Dr. Reddy said healthcare was entering one of the most transformative periods in its history, driven by the convergence of clinical expertise, scientific discovery and digital innovation. However, he emphasised that technology must complement rather than replace the human elements of medicine, with compassion, clinical judgement and human connection remaining central to healing.

Despite improvements in life expectancy and access to quality healthcare, the rising burden of non-communicable diseases remains a major concern for India. Cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and cancer account for nearly 63% of all deaths in the country, with cardiovascular diseases alone responsible for almost 28% of total mortality, according to the figures cited by Dr. Reddy. He said this growing burden underscores the need to transition from episodic treatment to continuous health management, early diagnosis and personalised care.

At Apollo, this vision is being advanced through the principles of Intelligence, Intent and Impact. Dr. Reddy said the combination of clinical expertise and technology was helping the organisation build an intelligent healthcare ecosystem capable of delivering evidence-based care with greater consistency and precision. The objective is to ensure that patients receive the same high standards of care, irrespective of where they live or how they access healthcare services.

Over the past year, Apollo has further strengthened its AI-led capabilities. Its proprietary Clinical Intelligence Engine has evolved into a clinical decision-support platform, while cloud-enabled digital infrastructure, AI-powered radiology, intelligent diagnostic workflows and real-time clinical dashboards are supporting clinical precision, operational efficiency and patient safety.

Dr. Reddy emphasised that the true promise of modern medicine lies not only in treating disease but also in identifying risks before illness takes hold. He said the ability to consistently deliver superior outcomes in complex clinical situations remains a defining measure of healthcare excellence.

Apollo has developed clinical expertise across its Centres of Excellence, including cardiology, oncology, neurology, gastroenterology, orthopaedics and transplantation. Supported by multidisciplinary teams, globally benchmarked protocols and continuous innovation, the group aims to deliver outcomes comparable with those of leading healthcare institutions worldwide.

This focus on advanced clinical care has also strengthened Apollo’s position as a destination for medical value travel, with patients from more than 150 countries seeking treatment at its facilities. Dr. Reddy noted that Apollo delivers world-class clinical care at approximately one-tenth of international costs, reflecting India’s potential to expand its role in global healthcare.

The group’s healthcare network spans more than 78 hospitals, 7,289 pharmacies, 2,501 diagnostic centres, over 300 clinics and more than 200 telemedicine centres. By integrating its hospitals, diagnostics network, Retail Health clinics and Apollo 24|7 digital platform, Apollo is working towards a connected healthcare model that supports patients across different stages of their healthcare journey.

Dr. Reddy said India stands at a defining moment in its healthcare development and has an opportunity to build an integrated, technology-enabled ecosystem rather than replicate fragmented models of care. He identified clinical excellence, digital innovation, entrepreneurial capabilities and the ability to deliver quality healthcare at scale as key strengths that can help India make world-class care more accessible while establishing itself as a global benchmark for patient-centric healthcare.

Having spent more than four decades building the foundations of this model, Apollo is continuing to expand its presence, with each new hospital intended to bring advanced clinical capabilities closer to communities, strengthen healthcare infrastructure and create a lasting impact. The group’s “I is for You” philosophy reflects its commitment to making world-class healthcare more accessible to every individual it serves.

Dr. Reddy also highlighted the opportunity presented by the Government of India’s “Heal in India” initiative, which aims to position the country as a preferred destination for advanced, affordable and compassionate medical care. He said India’s longstanding association with healing, medical knowledge and service to humanity provides a foundation for strengthening its global healthcare position.

Beyond attracting international patients, he said India could contribute to addressing global healthcare workforce shortages by providing skilled professionals, including doctors, nurses and allied health personnel, to serve healthcare systems worldwide. Such efforts, he noted, could strengthen India’s influence in global health while expanding the country’s contribution to international healthcare delivery.

Dr. Reddy’s vision places preventive healthcare, AI-enabled clinical decision-making, integrated service delivery and human compassion at the centre of Apollo’s approach. As India’s healthcare requirements continue to evolve, he believes that combining technology with clinical excellence and expanding access to quality care will be essential to improving patient outcomes and strengthening the country’s position in global healthcare.
